Scope Control

Optimize shipbuilding projects with an advanced Scope Control application that increases efficiency, manages costs and provides real-time visibility.

Reason

During ship construction and maintenance, it is essential to accurately record costs, hours and responsibilities. However, additional work and damage by outside parties are often not adequately recorded, leading to inefficiencies and unplanned costs. Therefore, there is a need for a solution that can collect real-time data, both online and offline. Offline functionality is essential because work often takes place in environments without stable Internet access, such as ship rooms or remote locations. This prevents important records from being lost and ensures seamless data transfer once a connection is available again. Traditional paper reports and emails often lead to errors and delays. Without a centralized system, it is difficult to effectively coordinate tasks and share information accurately between teams and subcontractors. A solution that provides both real-time photo upload, feedback and workflow management makes the process of claim reporting and recording additional workflows significantly more efficient. A customized, scalable Scope Control application responds to the complex requirements of the maritime industry and provides an efficient solution to these challenges.

  • Efficiency & Time Savings
    Fewer manual registrations and emails.
  • Cost savings
Directly record third-party damage for accurate chargeback.
  • Faster Turnaround Times
    Real-time recordings speed recovery work.

Approach

At Bizzomate, an effective 4-step method is used for application development and creating customized software solutions that perfectly match our customers’ requirements. This method is specially designed to respond quickly and flexibly to the needs of complex projects, such as the scope control application for shipbuilding.

  1. Discovery: Through close contact with project managers and engineers, Bizzomate identifies challenges, such as the need for offline functionality and a system that supports both mobile and desktop use.
  2. Defining: Based on these insights, key features are defined, such as real-time photo upload, workflow management, and clear task distribution. This specifically takes into account the different user interfaces for mobile and desktop.
  3. Design: A minimum viable product (MVP) is developed and tested in the work environment. The mobile part is optimized for offline use and quick access, while the desktop part provides a clear interface for planning and approvals.
  4. Do: The application will be rolled out in phases, gathering feedback and implementing improvements in regular updates to best align the solution with daily practices.

The solution

Bizzomate developed a powerful low-code application, built in Mendix, specifically tailored to the needs within shipbuilding projects. The Scope Control application consists of two integrated parts: a responsive desktop part for planning and approvals, and a mobile part that also works offline. This combination allows users to work efficiently both in the field and in the office. The mobile section provides offline functionality, essential for working environments without Internet access, such as ship rooms. Users can instantly add photos and comments on damage or additional work, which are automatically synchronized once connection is restored. The desktop section provides a clear interface for managing notifications, approvals and workflows. In addition, the application enables detailed time and task tracking, providing accurate insight into time spent and costs per project and task. This integrated solution helps companies immediately record errors and capture responsibility, which not only saves time, but also significantly improves communication and collaboration between departments and external parties.

The result

The Scope Control application has already had a significant impact within different departments and on multiple ships. The system acts as a single central source of information, allowing all stakeholders to access the same, up-to-date data at all times. This leads to:

  • Efficiency improvement and time savings: Manual registrations and communication via e-mail are greatly reduced.
  • Cost savings through better chargeback: Damage caused by external parties is now recorded immediately, so these costs can be charged more accurately.
  • Reduced turnaround times for remedial work: Real-time recordings provide a fast feedback loop, allowing remedial work to be completed faster and minimizing delays.
  • Efficiency & Time Savings
    Fewer manual registrations and emails.
  • Cost savings
Directly record third-party damage for accurate chargeback.
  • Faster Turnaround Times
    Real-time recordings speed recovery work.
